The traveler who wishes to explore Eastern Tibet (or Kham) might first take a bus in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province. On the road that leads from Kangding to the border of the Tibet Autonomous Region, after the pass of Cheto la, 4 238 m, one reaches the township of Xinduqiao (Dzongzhab) which claims to be "a photographer’s paradise” because of the variety of its colors during the fall. Further away, lies the town of Litang, one of the highest in the world at 4014 meters, nestled in its vast plateau. Litang is proud to be the birthplace of the seventh (1708-1757) and tenth Dalai Lama (1816-1837) - and, during the Riders’ Festival, the first week of August, one can see people bowing to a horse richly harnessed, alleged descendant of the one ridden by the third Dalai Lama....
